Just as you would not put away a firearm brought home from a rainy day of hunting without cleaning and treating it, you also need to care for your knife, which likewise plays an important role in the hunt. After use, a Damascus steel knife should be wiped carefully, cleaned of dirt and dried to avoid moisture during storage, which over time can cause rust, and do not forget to oil it. You do not need to buy professional protective products for this, as any cooking oil from the kitchen will do, since a hunting knife almost always comes into contact with meat and other food, which is why machine oil is not recommended for protecting the knife. Regular sharpening and honing should not be forgotten either. Still, anyone can forget a freshly used knife in the car or at the bottom of a bag, and after it has been there for a while, there are dark spots on the blade: the first signs of rust. For the best result, go to any hardware store, buy the finest sandpaper (P2000 – 2500) and remove the rust spots by gently rubbing the blade.
