A knife made of M390 steel will stay sharp for a very long time. This means the knife does not need to be sharpened so often. That is great not only because sharpening a knife takes time, but also because it means the knife will last longer. Besides edge retention, M390 has a few other good qualities. It can be hardened to a relatively high hardness without becoming brittle quickly. However, that does not mean M390 is very tough.
