CPM S90V is a high-end stainless tool steel produced by Crucible Industries using the Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process. It is widely used in premium knives due to its exceptional wear resistance and edge retention.
The steel contains high amounts of carbon (~2.3%) and vanadium (~9%), which form very hard vanadium carbides. These carbides give CPM S90V outstanding edge retention and abrasion resistance. With about 14% chromium, it also offers good corrosion resistance.
Typical hardness ranges from 58–61 HRC. While it holds an edge for a very long time, it is relatively difficult to sharpen and has moderate toughness compared to some other high-performance steels.
In short, CPM S90V is ideal for users who prioritize long-lasting sharpness and wear resistance over ease of sharpening.
