It is praised for its excellent edge retention. Why is Böhler M390 so popular? Edge retention. M390 is so resistant to wear and abrasion that it also keeps the shape of its edge properly. A knife made of M390 steel will stay sharp for a very long time. This means the knife does not need to be sharpened so often. That is great not only because sharpening a knife takes time, but also because it means the knife will last longer. Besides edge retention, M390 has a few other good qualities. It can be hardened to a relatively high hardness without becoming brittle quickly. However, that does not mean M390 is very tough. It means that M390, compared with other steels, can be ground somewhat thinner. M390 is also relatively stainless. Thanks to the high amount of chromium, rust will not stand a chance. Especially compared with other hard steels known for their edge retention, which can nevertheless still be affected by rust.
