Böhler M390 is one of the most popular types of steel today. It is praised for its excellent edge retention.
Why is Böhler M390 so popular? Because it retains its sharpness. M390 is so resistant to wear and tear that it also maintains the shape of its cutting edge. A knife made from M390 steel will stay sharp for a very long time. This means the knife doesn’t need to be sharpened as often. This is great not only because sharpening a knife takes time, but also because it means the knife will last longer.
In addition to retaining its edge, M390 has several other desirable properties. It can be hardened to a relatively high hardness without breaking easily. However, this does not mean that M390 is very durable. It means that, compared to other types of steel, M390 can be sharpened to a slightly finer edge.
M390 is also relatively rust-resistant. Due to its high chromium content, rust doesn’t stand a chance. This is especially true when compared to other types of hard steel, which are known for retaining their sharpness but can still be affected by rust.
